Standard configuration

Here is our standard server configuration:

Hardware

  • Compaq ProLaint 1850R rackmount server.
  • Smart Array 221 RAID controller.
  • Two 18GB 7200 RPM hot-swap hard drives.
  • 256 MB of ram.

  • Compaq remote insight board lights-out edition.

    This allows us to get console access to any machine from any web-browser. Even if the Compaq server has failed, this board has its own power supply and can show us the management logs of the server. This board also allows us to monitor for pre-failure conditions.

  • 24/7 4 hour rapid response hardware support contract from Compaq.

    We realize that catastrophic hardware failure may happen and in that event Compaq trained technicians will descend upon our site and fix the problem.

Software

  • Our own customized linux distribution based on RedHat 6.0

    Creating our own in-house customized distribution of linux gives us full control over the software running on our web hosting boxes. Also makes upgrading to the latest software easy, since everything is packaged.

  • Extensive customization of software.

    We have customized many, many parts of the software environment from the POP/IMAP server, to the Apache web server, to the login scripts investing over a year in getting everything just perfect.

  • Apache 1.3.6 - web server software

Management

  • 24/7 monitoring and failure paging

    It is also important to note that all servers and important services are monitored by a third-party monitoring service which will page us if anything goes wrong. This pager is worn 24/7 by a senior member of our technical staff.
