Spam Filter For Qmail
SPAM is a real hassle. It wastes time and clutters up your e-mail INBOX. In fact, it can be offensive. Wouldn’t your day be easier if you didn’t have to delete all of the SPAM you get?
Fight back! There are real tools you can use to fight SPAM.
BRIGHTMAIL
Enterprise spam filtering solution. Brightmail created a probe network of thousands of dummy e-mail addresses which receive only SPAM. The Brightmail company looks at this SPAM and then filters messages which look exactly the same, to get a very low false-positive rate.
- Benefits – Claimed 1 in 1,000,000 false-positive rate which means legitimate e-mail is almost never lost
- Downsides – E-mail has to pass through a third-party server before your server
- Cost – You pay per user; the minimum total license fee is $1000/year per company
SPAMASSASSIN
SpamAssasin is a heuristic based filter – this means that it looks for tell-tale characteristics of SPAM, such as particular phrases like “click here,” “FREE,” or “viagra” and other known characteristics. However, legitimate e-mail can also have these characteristics, so SpamAssasin can easily be wrong.
- Benefit – Free; easy to install
- Downsides – Higher false-positive rate (although the sensitivity is adjustable) which means legitimate e-mail can be lost
- Cost – Free; open source software
SPAMBAYES
Spambayes is a classifier engine – you train it on an archive of spam and legitimate e-mail messages that you have received, and it learns the difference. This training makes it very effective, because it learns not only what SPAM looks like, but what your legitimate e-mail looks like, as well. Spambayes can get more accurate over time: If it is unsure about a message, it will ask you and then learn.
- Benefits – Free; very good at identifying SPAM when trained properly (not much SPAM gets through and legitimate e-mail is almost never lost)
- Downsides – Training is not dummy-proof; must be installed on each client computer and only works with Outlook (server support is coming); technically alpha quality software
- Cost – Free; open source software
